In this article we will answer all the questions you have about rafting.

We’ll take you on board for a thrilling session in the Gorges du Verdon!

What is rafting?

Rafting is a water sport in which participants descend a river on an inflatable whitewater craft. This aquatic activity can be a very exhilarating experience as participants race down rapids and navigate through obstacles.

A rafting excursion in the rapids of the Verdon allows you to enjoy nature while passing through magnificent landscapes, between cliffs, and obviously it allows you to exercise. But above all, it’s a great way to bond with friends or family.

Rafting or hydrospeed: what’s the difference?

Rafting is an activity that is done in a team on a boat (about 8 participants) to go down the rapids.

The hydrospeed, on the other hand, is a float that steers itself to play with the current and the waves in the heart of the gorges. The navigation is done individually but the exit is done in groups.

These two activities are done in white water and guarantee thrills.

How many people can there be in a raft?

Inflatable boats or rafts can accommodate up to 8 participants. An experienced guide is part of the craft to help you steer the raft through the white water.

There are also smaller boats for 4-person craft.

How is a rafting descent?

A guide accompanies participants in the inflatable boat. The team will travel the whitewater of the canyon by maneuvering the raft according to the instructions of their guide. You will have to manage the rapids and the obstacles to avoid falling into the water. Unless the guide decides otherwise by making you discover figures with the raft. Do not hesitate to ask him if you have an adventurous soul! It’s an unforgettable playground.

When to go rafting in the Gorges du Verdon?

The best time to go rafting in the Gorges du Verdon canyon is from April to October. The water level is highest in May and June, so this is the best time for experienced rafters or for the more athletic participants. July and August are the busiest months, so if you want to avoid the crowds, you can enjoy it in September or October.

The activity depends entirely on the filling levels of the EDF Verdon dam. In summer, rafting is practiced only on days when water is released. Some years the level is too low to be able to go rafting (like in 2022). In this case, you can discover the other aquatic activities that will allow you to enjoy the Verdon region and the freshness of the waters of the river. Our teams at the leisure center in the village of Castellane are at your disposal to answer your questions and help you book a course.

How to prepare for your rafting session?

There are several things you need to do to prepare for your rafting session on the Verdon. First, you need to dress for the occasion. Wear clothes that you can get wet and that dry quickly. Second, apply sunscreen to all exposed skin. Third, you need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Finally, you must have a light meal before going up the river.

However, it is not necessary to have technical skills in navigation because the guide leads the team on board the raft.
